High speed, multi-county motorcycle pursuit ends when suspect runs out of gas

FORNEY, Texas β€” A 29-year-old Longview, Texas, man on a motorcycle fled from the Forney Police Department at speeds well in excess of 100 miles per hour early Wednesday morning β€” eventually ending in his arrest in the Athens, Texas, area where he ran out of gas.

The pursuit began at approximately 12:45 p.m. on eastbound U.S. Highway 80 near Windmill Farms Boulevard in Forney where the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Christopher Herrin of Longview, Texas, fled from police who were attempting to stop the motorcycle on a traffic offense. Herrin now faces charges for evading, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Herrin led police eastbound onto Spur 557, onto eastbound Interstate 20, and eventually north into Wills Point, Texas, on Farm-to-Market (FM) 2965 as the pursuit entered Van Zandt County. Police reported speeds of 130 miles per hour.

From Wills Point, the pursuit continued eastbound on U.S. Highway 80 through Edgewood, Texas, south on State Highway (SH) 19 through Canton, Texas, and into Athens, Texas, where the Athens Police Department joined the pursuit north onto SH 31.

Herrin turned around on SH 31 and fled south in the northbound lanes of the highway. Shortly after, the motorcycle ran out of gas and Herrin attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by the Athens Police Department.

Herrin was booked into the Forney City Jail on Wednesday and transferred to the Kaufman County Jail with charges for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful carrying of a firearm on bonds totaling $16,500. According to the police report, Herrin was in possession of 3.4 grams of methamphetamines, .25 grams of another narcotic, and a Ruger LCR .357-caliber revolver.
