KAUFMAN, Texas — A Houston man was arrested last week in connection with jugging cases in Kaufman, Crandall, and Seagoville, according to police.

The Kaufman Police Department credited Friday’s arrest of 27-year-old Deric Nash, of Houston, Texas, on an alert would-be victim.

“Earlier today, officers with the Kaufman Police Department arrested the suspect that we believe is responsible for the recent "jugging" offenses that occurred in Kaufman,” the Kaufman Police Department stated on Facebook. “We also believe that this suspect is responsible for similar offenses in Crandall and Seagoville.”

Kaufman Police Department Captain Ed Black says the would-be victim had just left the Wells Fargo bank in Kaufman after withdrawing some money and realized he was being followed. The would-be victim was instructed by police officers to drive to a location where police officers were waiting — ultimately stopping the suspect vehicle and arresting Nash.

Crandall Police Department Chief Dean Winters says his department was investigating a burglary of a motor vehicle case which occurred in the Dollar General store parking lot on Thursday when police officers, who were monitoring Kaufman Police Department radio traffic, heard a traffic stop involving a vehicle which matched the description of their suspect vehicle.

“After reviewing camera footage, it appeared that the vehicle was the same Gray SUV involved in offenses in Kaufman and Seagoville,” Winters told inForney.com.

Crandall investigators were able to arrive on scene of the traffic stop which led to Nash’s arrest and positively identify him as the suspect in their offense — later serving Nash at the Kaufman County Jail with an arrest warrant for burglary of a motor vehicle.

Black says the Kaufman Police Department is confident Nash is connected to two recent jugging cases in Kaufman.

In the Seagoville case, Nash’s vehicle matched the description of vehicle which reportedly followed a victim from a Seagoville-area bank into Dallas where they were victimized.

Investigators believe Nash is part of a larger Houston-based ring linked to jugging cases throughout the state. In 2015, Nash and two others were arrested in Houston for similar crimes, one of which involved the burglary of a disabled elder victim’s vehicle.

“I would like to send out a huge ‘thank you’ to the citizen that assisted in this case by simply being aware of their surroundings and reporting what they saw,” stated Black. “Also, a huge pat on the back to our officers who were on the ball and did a fantastic job in making this arrest.”

“The strong working relationship that we have with Kaufman PD and the citizen being aware of his environment and calling for Kaufman PD are both key elements in taking this subject into custody where he will not be victimizing local residents,” said Winters.

Nash was booked into the Kaufman County Jail on a Kaufman Police Department charge for no drivers license, charges from the Colleyville Police Department for speeding and violation of promise to appear, and the Crandall Police Department charge for burglary of a motor vehicle with two or more previous convictions. Nash posted more than $50,000 in bonds and was released on Sunday, according to jail records.
