“The Dallas and Denver offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation are comparing the homicides of Mark Hasse and Tom Clements to determine if there is any evidence linking the two crimes,” said City of Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh in a press release.
Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was murdered in broad daylight when he was gunned down by one, possibly two, gunmen on the morning of January 31, 2013. Hasse was parked in the Annex parking lot in Kaufman, Texas, and was making the short walk to the Kaufman County Courthouse when he was attacked.
Tom Clements, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections, was shot and killed at his front door on Tuesday morning, March 19, 2013, in Monument, Colorado. Authorities are investigating a suspect involved in a car chase in Montague County, about an hour north of Fort Worth, Texas, in the shooting in Colorado that killed Clements based on ballistics and evidence found in the suspect’s vehicle.
The suspect in the in the chase died after striking an 18-wheeler at a high rate of speed and then firing on police officers. According to authorities, the officers returned fire and shot the suspect, who has been identified as 28-year-old Evan Ebel, in the head. Ebel was later pronounced dead on Thursday by the Tarrant County Coroner.
According to a press release from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, investigators from Colorado have completed their work in Texas and returned to Colorado with evidence that will need to be examined to determine any link to the Clements homicide. Items brought back for examination included shell casings that will be examined by the Colorado Springs Metro Crime Lab.
The pursuit in Texas began after Ebel was stopped by Deputy Jame Boyd of the Montague County Sheriff's Office. Ebel shot Deputy Boyd three times, striking him twice in his protective vest and grazing his forehead. Deputy Boyd is expected to survive his injuries.
Chief Aulbaugh stated, “This is part of routine investigative work when two crimes occur under somewhat similar circumstances. If any link is found, or a possible link is disproven, that information will be released at the appropriate time.”
