KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A Kaufman County man who was involved in a 2015 shootout with police in January 2015, which resulted in the death of another suspect, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison on weapons related charges.

51-year-old Tracy Norman Hanson was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison on two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney John Parker of the Northern District of Texas announced on Wednesday.

On January 16, 2015, two law enforcement officers who were searching for Hanson spotted him hiding at a mobile home park in Kaufman County,” the release stated. “As they waited for backup officers to arrive, Hanson departed the location as the front-seat passenger in a pickup truck.”

“The officers attempted to stop the pickup, but a high-speed chase—with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour—ensued along two-lane county roads and graveled lanes,” continued the release. “During the course of the police chase, the pickup nearly collided with another vehicle, and it dangerously blazed past a school bus carrying 28 children.”

At the time of the shooting, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Kyle Bradford told inForney.com the vehicle Hanson was traveling in experienced mechanical failure and came to a stop in a culvert along the road.

Hanson and the vehicle’s driver exited the vehicle while firing at officers. The driver of the truck was shot and killed by officers who were returning fire and Hanson and another passenger were injured.

Hanson experienced a weapon malfunction, tossed his pistol, and surrendered. That weapon, a Bersa .380, was recovered as well as a Ruger .44 magnum revolver in Hanson’s possession. The Ruger was one of five firearms stolen from a residence in Kaufman County and sold to Hanson by the burglar.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers investigated the case and Deputy Criminal Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Tromblay prosecuted the case.

Hanson is also facing charges in Van Zandt County for assault of a public servant with a dangerous weapon.
