KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office is warning Kaufman County residents of a possible phone scam with the alleged fraudsters posing as sheriff's deputies or court employees.
Although these types of phone scams are not new, the sheriff's office says the latest reports suggest the fraudsters are posing as Kaufman County Sheriff's Office deputies and employees of 86th District Court Judge Casey Blair.
Both scams include demands for immediate payment of fraudulent warrant or court fines and, often times, demand the victim stay on the phone while they immediately purchase a gift card, Green Dot Shopping Card, or other prepaid debit card to pay the fraudulent fines over the phone.
"In one report the caller provided a phone number for “verification” and when it was called back they answered the phone “Deputy Jones”, the number could not be identified," stated the sheriff's office in a news release on Sunday.
"Today we learned of a scam where the caller represented themselves as working for 86th District Judge Blair; again demanding payment for warrants or fines," stated the release.
"County employees do not call individuals and collect fines," continued the release. "We urge anyone who receives these calls to report to KCSO 469-376-4500 or if they are suspicious of a call, to verify it with us."
