TALTY, Texas — A man was arrested and found in possession of drugs early Friday morning after leading police on a chase in a stolen vehicle.

Around 3:30 a.m., a white 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe was stolen from the 100 block of Harvest Way in Crandall, Texas, according to Crandall Police Department Chief Dean Winters.

Four hours later, around 7:30 a.m., a witness aware of the stolen vehicle observed it on U.S. Highway 175 near Bud Stoy Road and called police. The witness led police from the Crandall Police Department, Kaufman Police Department, and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office to the vehicle as it traveled north on Farm-to-Market (FM) 148.

The suspect attempted to elude police by driving through a pasture west of FM 148 and south of FM 1641 where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Winters says officer observed the suspect abandon the vehicle, flee on foot, and jump a residential fence in the 3000 block of West Alamosa Drive in the Winners Circle neighborhood.

“As officers approached the area they found the subject being held at gunpoint by an off-duty police officer,” stated Winters.

Suspected marijuana and methamphetamine were found in possession of the suspect.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Donald Cooper, was taken into custody without further incident and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana under two ounces, and possession of a controlled substance, according to Winters.

The vehicle was released to the registered owner at the scene.
