KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A 24-year-old man was arrested following an overnight pursuit and manhunt in Kaufman County and now faces charges for striking two police cruisers and a civilian's vehicle during the pursuit.
Kaufman County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Jolie Stewart says the pursuit began after a deputy observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way down a one-way street.
"As the deputy made contact with the driver and asked him for his identification, the suspect fled traveling at high speeds toward the City of Terrell," stated Stewart.
The man, later identified as 24-year-old Gaylon Aaron Sypert, fled eastbound into Terrell at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
Once in Terrell, Sypert fled southbound on Farm-to-Market (FM) 148, east on FM 987, and into the Post Oak Bend area at which time a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter joined in the pursuit.
Sypert then fled northbound on County Road (CR) 277 where the driver bailed on foot on CR 302.
Stewart says Sypert struck a Kaufman County Sheriff's Office vehicle occupied by a deputy at the intersection of FM 987 and FM 2578, struck a civilian vehicle on a county road just off of FM 987, and again struck a deputy's vehicle attempting to turn around. No injuries were reported to the civilian or deputies, according to Stewart.
Following a nearly 40-minute manhunt, Sypert was captured in a heavily-wooded area and later booked into the Kaufman County Jail charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant on $150,000 bonds each, one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a $100,000, and evading arrest or detention with a vehicle on a $50,000 bond.
