Man held on $325K bonds on firearm, drug charges following Terrell drug raid, one shot

TERRELL, Texas — The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting which was the result of a Terrell Police Department SWAT Team and Narcotics Unit drug raid at a home just north of the Terrell city limits.

TERRELL, Texas — The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting which was the result of a Terrell Police Department SWAT Team and Narcotics Unit drug raid at a home just north of the Terrell city limits.

One man, identified as 40-year-old Justin Purkey, was arrested and charged with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 1, greater than or equal to four grams and less than 200 grams, possession of marijuana less than two ounces, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon on bonds totaling $325,000. Another man at the residence, 65-year-old Phillip Keith Purkey, was shot after threatening police with a 12-gauge shotgun as they entered the residence.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:37 p.m. in the 15000 block of County Road 236 on Friday, October 23, 2015.

According to a Terrell Police Department release, police officers with the Terrell Police Department SWAT Team and Street Narcotics Unit entered the home “after repeatedly knocking and announcing their presence and intentions.”

Police say Phillip Purkey was shot at least once, possibly twice, and was transported by CareFlite ambulance to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, and is in good condition as of last check on Saturday morning. Purkey was alert and conscious when he was transported from the scene on Friday. Its unknown if he will face any charges.

Justin Purkey was held at the Terrell Police Department until Saturday night when he was transferred to the Kaufman County Jail.

Investigators were at the home until early Saturday morning. This remains an active investigation, according to police.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The officer who shot Purkey was identified as a 29-year-old and a six year veteran of the department. He has been placed on routine administrative leave.
