ORIGINAL — Several law enforcement agencies are in a standoff with a suspect who led them a high-speed pursuit from Forney and into Van Zandt County on Monday night.
Around 10:30 p.m., a Forney Police Department police officer observed a vehicle traveling on eastbound U.S. Highway 80 driving recklessly and without their driving lights.
The officer attempted a traffic stop but the suspect fled eastbound at a high rate of speed — at times in excess of 100 miles per hour.
The pursuit entered Terrell by way of Spur 557, turned back to U.S. Highway 80, and back again eastbound near Wills Point.
Police were able to successfully deploy spike strips and disable the suspect's tires. Despite this, police reported he continued fleeing at excess of 70 miles per hour.
During the pursuit, police reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the undercarriage of the vehicle.
The suspect came to a stop at McDonald's in Wills Point and refused to exit the vehicle.
As of 11:15 p.m., police remain in a standoff with the suspect and awaiting a Van Zandt County SWAT team. A K-9 was also requested to the scene.
This is a developing story.
