KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A small marijuana grow operation was discovered in southern Kaufman County following a structure fire where explosions were reported last week.
The fire was reported on County Road 4020 in between Kemp, Texas, and Mabank, Texas, north of U.S. Highway 175 on Thursday, February 12, 2015. Firefighters arrived to one structure, described as an outbuilding, fully engulfed in flames and a second outbuilding partially involved.
The explosions, according to Kaufman County Fire Marshal Randy Richards, were caused by cans and cylinders — filled with an unknown substance — which were exposed to fire.
While fighting the fire, firefighters entered the second partially involved structure and found the marijuana grow operation. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office issued a search warrant for the building and found at least eight plants at various grow stages.
One man has been arrested and charged with manufacturing, according to Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Fred Klingelberger. The investigation remains ongoing.
The Kemp Volunteer Fire Department and Mabank Volunteer Fire Department responded to fight the fire. The Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire which remains undetermined at the time of reporting.
