MESQUITE, Texas — A Mesquite police officer shot an alleged vehicle burglary suspect during a confrontation Wednesday night, according to police.

At approximately 7 p.m., a Mesquite Police Department officer responded to a report of a man breaking into a pickup truck in the 1300 block of South Town East Boulevard. The 911 caller stated the suspect had broken into a pickup truck and the alarm was activated, Mesquite Police Department spokesperson Brian Parrish stated.

The first responding officer made contact with the man which sparked a confrontation. During the confrontation, Parrish says the officer fired his pistol at the suspect, striking him.

"The suspect continued to fight until three additional officers arrived at the scene and managed to handcuff the suspect," he said. "The suspect demonstrated such physical strength; it took all three officers to hold him on the ground until paramedics arrived."

The suspect was transported to an area hospital for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

Parrish says an investigation into the incident remains ongoing and additional details will be released as they become available.
