Multiple officers shot, several killed following a demonstration and march in downtown Dallas

FORNEY, Texas — Multiple officers have been shot and several were killed following a demonstration and march in protest of officer-involved shootings across the country on Thursday night in downtown Dallas.

FORNEY, Texas — Multiple officers have been shot and several were killed following a demonstration and march in protest of officer-involved shootings across the country on Thursday night in downtown Dallas.

Latest information released by Dallas Police Department Chief David Brown indicates at least 11 police officers from the Dallas Police Department and DART were shot and at least five officers have died.

Please note, this is a developing and ongoing story with very fluid information which may be updated as additional details are released.

Brown says they believe two shooters, described as “snipers,” fired at officers from an elevated position in an “ambush style” and “positioned to triangulate” their attack on officers below — some who were shot in the back.

Brown says a person of interest, whose picture was circulated, has turned himself in and another alleged suspect who was involved in a shootout with SWAT officers is also in custody.

One suspect was cornered on the second floor of a parking garage at El Centro College, according to Brown. Its unknown if that person was the individual who has been taken into custody following a shootout with police.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Dallas Police Department at (214) 671-3485.

Coy Hirth of Talty, Texas, tells inForney.com he was downtown on Griffith Street when the incident began.

At approximately 9:08 p.m., Hirth says he was parked in a parking lot near Griffith Avenue in downtown Dallas while on duty as an Uber driver. Hirth says he began to hear gunshots when a passenger scheduled an Uber pickup. While attempting to coordinate a pickup location, Hirth says he saw additional officers and SWAT approaching the scene of the shooting.

Hirth says his passenger was walking in the protest when the shots rang out and an officer pushed him and told him to take cover. Hirth was able to meet with the passenger and transport him away from the shooting.

“An intensive search for suspects is currently underway,” according to the Dallas Police Department. “No suspects are in custody at this time.”

Patrick Daugherty of Kaufman, Texas, is also downtown for work and says, following the shooting, no civilians were walking the area of the shooting as tactical vehicles swept the streets.

"It's very eerie and scary," said Daugherty. "Like a war zone."

The Dallas Police Department’s bomb squad is also out with a suspicious package.

This is a developing story.
