TERRELL, Texas — A drug raid last week in Terrell yielded two arrests on drug-related charges, child endangerment charges, and led to an ongoing investigation into alleged dog fighting.
On March 16, 2017, at approximately 6:34 a.m., the Terrell Police Department SWAT team and Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at 108 Cherokee Street, according to Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom.
Upon entry, investigators located several bottles continuing a brown liquid substance which field tested positive for Phencyclidine, also known as PCP, baggies commonly used to distribute illegal narcotics, scales, and other drug paraphernalia. The total weight of all the PCP seized was 39.77 grams.
Sansom says three children, ages 3, 4, and 5, were asleep on the couch, without blankets or pillows, when investigators made entry into the home. One of the bottles of PCP was located inside a small refrigerator approximately 20 feet from where the children were sleeping and was easily accessible to the children, according to Sansom.
The children were placed in the custody of another family member.
Also in the small refrigerator, investigators located several vials of medication typically used in the veterinarian field, according to Sansom.
Narcotics investigators spoke with a member of the Dallas District Attorney’s Office, who specializes in dog fighting investigations, and were advised that several of the medications were used to treat a dog which has been bitten by another dog, Sansom said.
Investigators located one brindle-colored pit bull and three black-colored pit bulls chained up on the property. Animal control took possession of the dogs pending further investigation. Additional charges are pending.
“Officers located a treadmill used for dogs, a stand used for strengthening a dogs jaws and a wooden shoot covered in what appeared to be blood,” stated Sansom. “These and other indicators at the scene suggest the dogs are being trained for fighting.”
Arrested were 32-year-old Michael Wayne Green and 28-year-old Derika Butler.
Butler was charged with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 2 greater than or equal to four grams and less than 400 grams and three counts of abandon/endanger child, criminal negligence. Butler was released after posting $65,000 in bonds.
Green remains jailed on bonds totaling $600,000 with three counts of abandon/endanger child with criminal negligence, manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 2 or 2-A greater than or equal to four grams and less than 400 grams, and two counts of possession of a firearm by felon.
A search of Green’s car also revealed a set of tools commonly used in burglaries. Those tools were seized.
