KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A reported stolen 18-wheeler was spotted by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers in Kaufman County on Wednesday and led police on a multi-county pursuit into Hunt County where a standoff is currently underway with the driver.
KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A reported stolen 18-wheeler was spotted by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers in Kaufman County on Wednesday and led police on a multi-county pursuit into Hunt County where a standoff is currently underway with the driver.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police in Greenville, Texas, in which tear gas was deployed as well as a K-9 unit.
Kaufman County Texas Department of Public Safety troopers began tracking the 18-wheeler on Interstate 20 in Kaufman County after it was reported missing. The driver had not been heard from in approximately 30 hours and did not show up for a delivery in the northeast.
Police have not confirmed if the man who was taken into custody is the designated driver of the 18-wheeler.
Troopers followed the 18-wheeler through Forney, Texas, on U.S. Highway 80 and into Dallas County where troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The 18-wheeler fled westbound on U.S. Highway 80 into Mesquite, Texas, where the 18-wheeler continued onto northbound Interstate 635 and eastbound on Interstate 30 through Rockwall County and into Hunt County.
During the pursuit, police were able to spike several of the 18-wheeler’s tires.
The 18-wheeler was traveling on the service road before the service road came to an end at the Cowleech Fork of the Sabine River where a brief standoff ensued.
Traffic on eastbound Interstate 30 is backed up for miles.
