TERRELL, Texas — One person was shot and another was injured in an overnight shooting in Terrell.

TERRELL, Texas — One person was shot and another was injured in an overnight shooting in Terrell.

On Monday, October 10, 2016, at approximately 12:47 a.m., Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom says a department supervisor was in the area of State Highway (SH) 205 near Walmart when the officer heard a single gunshot coming from the Walmart parking lot at 1900 West Moore Avenue.

The officer observed several vehicles moving in the area of the Murphy’s gas station. One of the vehicles approached the officer with the vehicle’s doors open and the driver, who appeared to be in distress, was waving his hands in the air, according to Sansom.

“[The driver] stated that his girlfriend had been shot and the suspect was leaving the parking lot,” stated Sansom.

The suspect vehicle was observed leaving the parking lot at the traffic signal at SH 205. The officer caught up to the vehicle, which was registered out of Florida, and initiated contact.

Sansom says the suspect was ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint and was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect, 28-year-old Latoya Vines-Derrick, of Florida, was arrested. An empty holster was tucked in her waistband and, during inventory search of her vehicle, officers located a .40-caliber pistol.

Sansom says the shooting was the result of an altercation between co-workers who were meeting in the parking lot to carpool to another job site.

Witnesses and victims tell police Vines-Derrick was kicked out of the carpool van because of her behavior which led to a verbal disturbance. The verbal disturbance turned physical when Vines-Derrick struck 42-year-old Tanya Bryant of Terrell, Texas, in the head with her gun.

“After a brief physical altercation between them, another co-worker began to break them up and Latoya turned and shot her in the leg,” stated Sansom.

That victim was identified as 28-year-old Candice Bean of Terrell, Texas. Bean suffered a broken femur as a result of the gunshot wound and was transported to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, according to Sansom.

Bryant was taken to Baylor Scott & White in Forney, Texas, due to her head injury.

“Both victims are doing well are expected to survive,” stated Sansom.

Vines-Derrick was transported to the Terrell Municipal Jail where she was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
