Two inmates were taken to a local hospital, and one inmate was taken to a Dallas area hospital in critical condition.

The Texas Rangers have been called upon to assist in investigating this incident. According to a statement issued by the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, their involvement is necessary to determine the cause and review the jail's policies and procedures.

“Their involvement underscores the need for a thorough examination of the circumstances of the medical emergencies within the jail premises. Jail policies and procedures will be reviewed during the investigation,” stated the release.

“The collaboration between jail staff, medical professionals, and law enforcement highlights the coordinated efforts aimed at ensuring the well-being of those under confinement.”

On January 1, 2021, Sheriff Beavers implemented the use of the Intranasal Naloxone Policy and Procedure for opiate overdoses at the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, as well as applicable training to all employees.

“It is the policy of this agency to aid any person(s) who may be suffering from an opioid overdose,” stated the release.
