TERRELL, Texas — Two people were arrested in a narcotics investigation earlier this week in which police seized marijuana and over $10,000 in cash believed to be the proceeds of narcotics sales.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., on February 7, 2018, Terrell Police Department narcotics investigators observed a tan Cherolet Impala, commonly driven by 28-year-old Kirk Gardner, illegally parked on Jackson Drive — on the left side facing oncoming traffic.

The investigators observed several hand-to-hand narcotics transactions from their vantage point and called patrol units for assistance, according to Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom.

The patrol units conducted a traffic stop based on probable cause provided by the investigators and, upon making contact, reported a strong odor or marijuana emitting from the vehicle, stated Sansom.

"A lawful search by Investigators was conducted of the vehicle and marijuana residue was found throughout the car," stated Sansom.

During their search of the vehicle, investigators located Crown Royal bags, "which are commonly used to hold narcotics," a digital scale, several clear plastic bags commonly used in the distribution of narcotics, and a small amount of marijuana in one of the plastic baggies.

Gardner and a passenger, 18-year-old Jalen Newsome, both of Terrell, Texas, were arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

"While being transported, patrol officers gave warning specifically telling Newsome if he brought narcotics in the jail he would be charged with a felony offense and Newsome denied any possession," stated Sansom. "This notice is also boldly posted at the holding facility entrance."

After entering the booking area of the jail, both Gardner and Newsome admitted to having marijuana concealed in their pants.

Gardner possessed a large clear bag with approximately 26 grams of marijuana and $10,040 in cash. Newsom possessed a small clear bag of approximately 8.8 grams of marijuana and a marijuana blunt inside a Crown Royal Bag, similar to the bags found in the car, according Sansom.

Gardner and Newsome were then additionally charged with possession of marijuana less than two ounces and prohibited substance in a correctional facility.
