Rockwall Police have identified the suspect who led officers on a chase along State Highway 205 in Rockwall County south to Kaufman County where it ended in a nearly five-hour standoff with police.

Rockwall Police initially ran 42-year-old David Daryll Robert Thurber's Florida license plates which came back for a car reported stolen in Florida. Upon initiating a traffic stop near IH-30 on September 26, 2013, at approximately 11:17 p.m., the suspect fled and a pursuit began.

Kaufman County law enforcement later joined the chase and spike strips were successfully deployed bringing the suspect to a stop in the Cornerstone Baptist Church parking lot on SH 205, just before the intersection at US Highway 80. The chase lasted approximately 15 minutes, according to Rockwall Police.

According to Rockwall Police Department's Sergeant Aaron McGrew, the suspect then “held a handgun to his head threatening suicide.” Terrell's SWAT team was then called in to assist with the ensuing standoff. SH 205 near the area of the incident was closed to thru traffic, according to witnesses.

The standoff came to an end after the suspect voluntarily surrendered to police. Authorities recovered two stolen handguns from the vehicle.

According to The Northern Virginia Daily, Thurber was charged with felony grand larceny for stealing a safe from a residence in Front Royal, Virginia. Thurber also has pending charges in Florida and Arkansas, according to the Daily.

Thurber now faces charges in Rockwall, Texas for evading arrest with a vehicle, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Each charge carries a $15,000 bond, which have not been posted.
