TERRELL, Texas — A Quinlan, Texas, man was arrested after an alleged $333 theft at the Walmart in Terrell, Texas, and an ensuing high-speed police pursuit.
In response to an inForney.com inquiry, Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom said police responded to the Walmart at 1900 West Moore Avenue at 1:49 p.m., just eight seconds after a reported theft at the location.
A man, who would later be identified by police as 52-year-old Rene Garcia of Quinlan, Texas, allegedly stole $333.33 worth of clothing from Walmart. Police spotted Garcia’s vehicle as it was exiting the Walmart parking lot behind CiCi’s Pizza.
Garcia then ran a stop sign at Sam Walton Way and West Moore Avenue where an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
Sansom says this is when Garcia fled from police westbound on West Moore Avenue, also known as U.S. Highway 80, at speeds over 90 miles per hour.
As the pursuit approached Forney, the Forney Police Department was notified and two marked Forney units joined the pursuit, according to Sansom. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office was also requested for assistance.
In Dallas County, on U.S. Highway 80 near Collins Road, also known as State Highway 352, a Dallas County Sheriff’s deputy deployed spike strips — successfully spiking the two right tires of the vehicle Garcia was driving, identified as a 2007 Ford F-150.
Garcia continued to flee officers at approximately 45 miles per hour with the two deflated tires, according to Sansom. The pursuit came to an end at the exit for Galloway Avenue in Mesquite, Texas, without further incident.
Garcia was charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle with previous conviction, a third-degree felony, and theft under $1,500 with two or more previous convictions, a state-jail felony.
Sansom says additional stolen merchandise was recovered inside the vehicle.
