KAUFMAN, Texas — An alleged intoxicated driver was arrested after a police chase ended in a wrong-way crash on December 26, 2017.

Just before 8 p.m., the Kaufman Police Department was dispatched to the 1000 block of North State Highway 34 in an attempt to locate a reckless driver who was reportedly driving with no headlights and swerving into oncoming traffic.

A Kaufman Police Department officer located the reckless driver in a blue Ford F-250 pickup truck and attempted a traffic stop, according to Kaufman Police Department Detective Sergeant Jason Stastny.

“The truck failed to pull over and continued driving east on State Highway 243,” he said. “Officers determined that the driver of the truck was possibly intoxicated and initiated a pursuit.”

The pursuit continued eastbound on SH 243 into Van Zandt County when the truck struck an oncoming vehicle.

Police say Cecil Ray Gray, Jr. of Kaufman, Texas, was determined to be intoxicated and taken into custody.

The driver of the vehicle struck sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Statsny. That driver’s current condition is unknown.

Gray faces charges for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and intoxication assault with a deadly weapon, among other charges.
