KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas β A registered sex offenders' trial for continuous sexual assault of a child under the age of 14 and aggravated sexual assault of a child has been bumped from its original jury trial setting on July 21, 2014 to a special setting in the 422nd District Court on September 15, 2014, following a re-indictment by a Kaufman County grand jury.
The charges against 55-year-old Pedro Segura stem back to January 2010, according to the indictment. Segura is accused of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14 continuously from on or about January 1, 2010, through September 25, 2011.
Segura was arrested by the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office on December 15, 2011, and released after posting a $100,000 bond.
In 1991, Segura was charged by the Pasedena Police Department with indecency with a child by sexual contact, a second-degree felony. He was given deferred adjudication, seven years probation, and required to register as a sexual offender for life.
The defense is allowed 10 days to prepare for trial following a new or amended indictment, according to prosecutors, which prompted the rescheduling of the jury trial. Jury announcement is scheduled for September 11, 2014.
The continuous sexual assault of a child under the age of 14 and the aggravated sexual assault of a child are both first-degree felonies. If convicted of these new charges Segura could face life in prison, or for any term of not more than 99 years or less than 25 years.
