Terrell man arrested after high-speed police chase in stolen vehicle

TERRELL, Texas β€” A Terrell man was arrested earlier this month after a high-speed police chase, turned foot chase, in a stolen vehicle in northeast Texas.

TERRELL, Texas β€” A Terrell man was arrested earlier this month after a high-speed police chase, turned foot chase, in a stolen vehicle in northeast Texas.

27-year-old Ski Michael Smith of Terrell, Texas, was arrested after police in Reno, Texas, attempted to stop a pickup truck he was driving for not displaying a rear license plate.

According to Reno Police Department Chief Matt Birch, Smith, instead of pulling over for police officers, fled at a high-rate of speed.

β€œThe pursuit led police through a nearby neighborhood and eventually onto Lamar Road where speeds reached over 100 mph,” he said.

The truck Smith was driving blew a tire and stopped in the 6300 block of Lamar Road.

Smith then fled on foot, leading Reno police and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers on a foot pursuit before being taken into custody.

The truck was later determined to have been stolen the day before out of the Paris, Texas, police department.

Smith was charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, evading arrest or detention, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and theft of property between $2,500 and $30,000.

A passenger in the vehicle, identified as 28-year-old Holly Christian Caffey, of Paris, Texas, was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Although Smith currently shows a Terrell address, he has an extensive criminal history in Lamar County including, among others, charges for burglary of a vehicle and habitation, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, they, assault causes bodily injury, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle stemming back to 2008.
