TERRELL, Texas — A Terrell man who was arrested last month for aggravated kidnapping is now facing a charge of capital murder related to two separate cases out of Dallas and Fort Worth, respectively.
On Sunday, March 26, 2017, Dallas police say 50-year-old James Ernest Floyd Jr. of Terrell, Texas, allegedly kidnapped a man at gunpoint in the 1500 block of East Louisiana, took him to Terrell, and later released him. Police were able to identify Floyd as the suspect at the time but were unable to locate him.
Two days later, on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, the Fort Worth Police Department began investigating a home invasion in which a person shot an elderly couple before stealing their blue Kia Sorento SUV and fleeing the scene.
Fort Worth police located a sedan, with a flat tire, at a gas station near the home invasion which was registered to Floyd. The couple’s stolen credit card was used in Terrell where the Kia Sorento was later located at the Texas Apartments on Mineral Wells less than two miles from Floyd’s home.
Floyd was arrested later that day as he was walking away from his residence in Terrell, Texas, by members of the Fort Worth Fugitive Unit and the Terrell Police Department on an outstanding warrant from the Dallas Police Department for aggravated kidnapping in their March 26 case.
Following his arrest, Floyd initially agreed to be interviewed by Fort Worth Police Department detectives but later requested an attorney.
On April 6, 2017, Fort Worth police learned one of the elderly victims, identified as John William Porter, died of injuries sustained from a gunshot wound to the head.
On April 10, 2017, a warrant was issued for Floyd for capital murder in the death of Porter.
According to the warrant affidavit, Floyd was in the area of the Porter’s home because he was meeting a man, who he met online, for which he was having a sexual relationship.
During the home invasion, Floyd allegedly shot Porter in the head and his wife, Diane, in the abdomen. Diane is recovering from her injuries.
Floyd was transferred from the Kaufman County Jail to the Dallas County Jail where he remains jailed on a $100,000 bond for aggravated robbery, a parole violation, and a $250,000 bond for capital murder.
