Terrell PD: Man shot in hand during disturbance, struggle with ex-wife

TERRELL, Texas — A man was shot in the hand on Saturday night while struggling over a handgun with his ex-wife during a disturbance at a residence in the 300 block of Walnut Street.

TERRELL, Texas — A man was shot in the hand on Saturday night while struggling over a handgun with his ex-wife during a disturbance at a residence in the 300 block of Walnut Street.

Terrell Police Department Chief Jody L. Lay says police responded to the residence at approximately 11 p.m. and, upon arrival, discovered a lot of blood and the house in disarray.

“The female caller, Alexis Burnes, 34, stated her ex-husband, Jaqwandis Burns, 37, produced a handgun during an argument,” stated Lay. “While struggling over control of the weapon, the gun discharged, striking the male in the left hand.”

Burns fled the scene with the handgun, described as a .357 magnum, and later sought medical treatment at Baylor, Scott & White in Forney, Texas, where police were notified of the gunshot wound. Burns was further transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, for further treatment and surgery.

“Police have only been able to briefly interview the man,” stated Lay.

Terrell police also sought medical attention for Burnes who had suffered a number of non-life threatening injuries, according to Lay. She was treated and released from Baylor, Scott & White in Sunnyvale, Texas.

Lay says the firearm was recovered from Burn’s mother’s home in Terrell and is in police custody.

Charges are pending in the case which Lay says remains under investigation.
