TERRELL, Texas — No arrest will be made in a Thursday morning fatal shooting, according to police, because an elderly Terrell man allegedly shot a 52-year-old Dallas, Texas, man in defense of himself and his niece.
Police responded to a residence in the 200 block of South Hattie at 5:13 a.m. for a man who was reportedly shot. Upon their arrival, Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom says police located a man, identified as 52-year-old Cameron Villa of Dallas, Texas, who had been shot.
Villa was transported by CareFlite ambulance to Lake Pointe Medical Center in Forney, Texas, where he succumbed to his injuries just before 7 a.m., stated Sansom.
“Officers had been at the same location earlier, just after midnight, in reference to a disturbance but the actor had already left the scene and was not located,” stated Sansom. “This same subject was now identified as the injured party.”
“An 87-year-old Terrell, Texas, resident reportedly shot the subject during the disturbance at his home,” stated Sansom. “The cause for the disturbance and the reason for the subject’s presence remain under investigation.”
In a Thursday night update, Sansom says the homeowner shot Villa once in the back in defense of himself as well as his live-in adult niece who family members said was involved in a long and violent relationship with Villa.
“During the night Villa was allowed into the residence and began beating the niece, eventually also attacking the elderly [homeowner] and the niece alternately,” stated Sansom. “Villa was shot once in the back with a small caliber pistol.”
Sansom says evidence collected at the scene was consistent with statements given by the homeowner and the niece.
“The shooter has been identified is cooperating fully with police and no arrests have been made at this time,” stated Sansom who said the case will likely be referred to a grand jury.
