TERRELL, Texas — The Terrell Police Department is investigating a man’s death after receiving a concern for welfare call about the man who was partially clothed and allegedly injuring a small animal.

The Terrell Police Department says it received a concern for welfare call at approximately 4:21 a.m., on Sunday, August 9, 2015, in the 1200 block of West Moore Avenue, states Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom in a Tuesday night press release.

The man, identified as 42-year-old Gary Wells, was in the roadway wearing only a blue shirt and underwear and was reportedly “behaving very strangely” and “attempting to injure a small animal” which was later identified as a dog, stated Sansom.

Sansom says responding officers immediately recognized Wells was under the influence of some type of drug or chemical and provided medical treatment with an ambulance and the Terrell Fire Department responding.

No injuries were reported to the dog who was later impounded

“[Wells] voluntarily entered the ambulance to be transported for medical attention,” stated Sansom. Police say Wells began “fighting” with the paramedic onboard the ambulance “likely due to a reaction to the overdose and officer was requested to accompany the ambulance staff.”

The ambulance began transporting Wells to Presbyterian Hospital in Kaufman, Texas, when Wells managed to break the “soft restraints” and was temporarily restrained with handcuffs “to maintain his control and prevent injury to himself” or the police and EMS staff, according to Sansom.

Moments later, the ambulance stopped near the intersection of State Highway 34 and Interstate 20 because Wells was in “immediate distress.”

The ambulance diverted to Lake Pointe Medical Center in Forney, Texas, due to its closer proximity. “Restraints were no longer necessary and two officers assisted the EMS personnel with CPR efforts during the transport to Lake Pointe,” stated Sansom.

“Upon arrival, Wells was pronounced dead by the attending physician at 5:54 a.m.,” Sansom stated.

Next of kin has been notified and Kaufman County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Patricia Ashcroft has ordered an autopsy.

This is a developing story.
