TERRELL, Texas — The Texas Rangers and the Terrell Police Department are investigating an officer-involved shooting which occurred in Terrell on Saturday morning and resulted in the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Mac Arthur Degraffinried of Arlington, Texas, being shot multiple times by police.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m. in the 300 block of Wall Street in north Terrell.
In a Saturday press release, Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom stated police were attempting to locate Degraffinried early Saturday morning after police were notified he was in the city and threatening his estranged wife with a gun. Sansom said Degraffinried was known to police for being armed and very dangerous.
Degraffinried's vehicle was located in the city around 4:25 a.m. unoccupied. He was later observed getting into the vehicle around 7:25 a.m. by an off-duty officer who notified on-duty officers. Sansom says when on-duty officers attempted to make contact with the man, he fled in the vehicle.
The pursuit ended in the 300 block of Wall Street where Degraffinried exited the vehicle with a pistol in his hand and attempted to gain access to a residence where his estranged wife was located, according to Sansom. Officers ordered the man to drop the weapon and stop when a single Terrell Police Department officer shot the suspect several times "to prevent him from breaking into the residence and gaining access to the woman."
Degraffinried was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he is being treated for the gunshot wounds and is expected to survive, according to Sansom. The Terrell Police Department is currently maintaining custody of the man by armed guard at Baylor until his release from the hospital when he will be transported to the Kaufman County Jail.
The Terrell Police Department arrested Degraffinried on October 20, 2015, after he was reported stalking the estranged wife. “During that investigation, Mansfield Police Department informed the Terrell Police he was wanted for Hindering Apprehension and cautioned them to use extreme caution with him, as he was very dangerous, does not like police, and is known to carry a weapon,” stated Sansom who said Degraffinried was located at the time and arrested on the warrant without incident.
Degraffinried was released from the hospital and booked into the Kaufman County Jail on Wednesday, November 11, 2015. Degraffinried is being charged by the Terrell Police Department with evading arrest of detention with a vehicle, burglary of a habitation with intent to commit other felony, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon with bonds totaling $140,000. Degraffinried is also being held on two charges for sexual assault in Tarrant County, assault causing bodily injury in Tarrant County, hinder apprehension or prosecution in Tarrant County, two other Tarrant County holds, three holds from the Grapevine Police Department, and three holds from the Grand Praire Police Department. In total, Degraffinried is being held on bonds totaling $411,184.20.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave, according to Sansom who said the officer is an experienced veteran of the department.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
The Texas Rangers are also investigating a separate Terrell Police Department officer-involved shooting which occurred on October 23, 2015, while police were attempting to serve a search warrant. More on that story, here.
