KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas β Three separate high-speed motorcycle pursuits in Kaufman County ended in wrecks this weekend β two of which had already been called off after the pursuing officer lost sight of the fleeing motorcycles.
One suspect remains in critical condition at Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler, Texas, after fleeing at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour.
Overnight, Talty Police Department Chief Mike Hoskins tells inForney.com he began pursuing two motorcycles on Interstate 20 near mile marker 492 who were speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour.
The chase continued at high speeds for more than 30 miles before Hoskins lost sight of the motorcycles in Van Zandt County. Hoskins says the pursuit was called off and, minutes later, emergency personnel from Van Zandt County were dispatched to a motorcycle crash near mile marker 523.
Hoskins says the motorcyclists in the wreck was one of the two motorcycles he was pursuing. The motorcyclists had failed to negotiate an exit when he wrecked, according to Hoskins.
The motorcyclists, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler, Texas, where he remains hospitalized in critical condition. He faces charges for evading arrest, possession of marijuana over four ounces, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The other fleeing motorcyclist did not stop and remains at-large.
The Texas Department of Public Safety also pursued a motorcycle overnight which ended in a crash on U.S. Highway 80. 46-year-old Mark Wood was arrested and charged with evading arrest or detention with previous conviction and is being held at the Kaufman County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
On Friday night, the Talty Police Department attempted to stop a motorcycle which was speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour. Hoskins says the man fled at high speeds on Interstate 20 to Farm-to-Market (FM) 429, along several other FM roads in Kaufman County, and eventually back into the Talty area before the pursuit was called off.
Approximately two minutes later, Hoskins says a motorcycle matching the description of the fleeing motorcycle reportedly crashed on FM 148 near Prairie Chapel Road in between Talty and Crandall. The motorcyclist, who was determined to be the one fleeing, was attempting to adjust a GoPro camera on his helmet, likely the cause of the crash, according to Hoskins.
The man was treated and released for minor injuries and booked into the Kaufman County Jail for evading arrest and other traffic violations.
