KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Two people were arrested following a high-speed, multi-county police pursuit which began in Dallas and traveled through portions of Dallas, Kaufman, Ellis, and Navarro Counties.
A male driver of a pickup truck, believed to be from Scurry, Texas, led police on an hour long chase with speeds between 100 and 110 miles per hour, according to police. He and a female passenger, who have yet to be identified, were arrested after stopping the pursuit in Navarro County late Tuesday night.
A Dallas County Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Task Force officer in an unmarked vehicle first observed the truck driving erratically and at a high rate of speed on U.S. Highway 75 near Mockingbird Lane in Dallas, Texas, according to police.
The officer also observed a “punched” driver’s side door lock and what were believed to be false license plates. Police later determined the truck was stolen out of Garland, Texas, on April 16, 2015.
When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the two suspects tossed several items from the car including a .40-caliber handgun and a shotgun.
A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter joined the chase as it entered Kaufman County on U.S. Highway 175 near Seagoville, Texas. The driver exited the highway on Farm-to-Market (FM) 1389/Combine Road before reaching Crandall, Texas, and headed back into Dallas County through Seagoville — eluding awaiting Kaufman County Sheriff’s deputies who were ready to deploy spike strips near Kaufman, Texas.
The pursuit continued onto I-20 and then south on I-45 through Ellis County. Police were able to successfully spike the suspect’s two front tires around mile marker 262, near Ferris, Texas, however, the suspect continued fleeing at speeds between 70 and 90 miles per hour.
Additional spike strips were deployed along I-45 which also deflated the truck’s right rear tire. The chase came to an end without further incident at mile marker 238 near Rice, Texas, in Navarro County after the man stopped the truck and surrendered.
Police also recovered two flak jackets from the vehicle.
