FORNEY, Texas — Two people have been charged with racing in connection with a fatal motorcycle crash last month, according to the Forney Police Department.
On March 21, 2018, at approximately 6 p.m., the Forney Police Department responded to a major crash in the 1800 block of Farm-to-Market (FM) 741, in front of Forney High School.
Police say the motorcycle, driven by 22-year-old Dakota Ashwood, was traveling southbound on FM 741 at an excess of 120 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
A van, traveling northbound, turned in front of the path of the motorcycle in an attempt to enter the Forney High School parking lot. Ashwood collided with the van, became pinned, and died as a result of the crash.
Investigators discovered evidence that Ashwood was racing two other vehicles at the time of the crash, according to an update from the department on Tuesday morning.
The drivers of those two vehicles, 17-year-old Armando Leon and 18-year-old Dustin Blake Denton, were both subsequently arrested and charged with racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony. Leon remains jailed at the Kaufman County Jail on a $20,000 bond. Bond information for Denton was not available at press time.
In interviews with police, Leon admitted to driving approximately 85 miles per hour and Denton admitted speeds between 65 and 70 miles per hour. The speed limit in the area of the crash is 55 miles per hour.
"The speed of these vehicles was the contributing factor in the accident that resulted in Mr. Ashwood’s death," stated the department.
The female driver of the van was not charged in the crash, according to police.
