FORNEY, Texas — A utility scam threatening to cutoff area businesses and residents of power is making its rounds, the latest phone scam of its kind.
Several area businesses have already been contacted, according to the Forney Police Department.
In each instance, a person posing as an Oncor employee calls from a blocked number and tells the would-be victim their utility bill is past due and, if not paid in full, an awaiting utility truck will disconnect their service.
Victims are given a 800-number to contact to settle their bills for which they are given an hour to pay.
Oncor says they will never request payment directly from customers to prevent outages, either in person or on the phone. Additionally, Oncor says any field employees carry company identification which can be verified by calling (888) 313-6862 and field employees will never ask to enter your home.
“If you are an Oncor customer, use the number provided on your statement should you feel you need to make contact,” stated the Forney Police Department.
