FORNEY, Texas (Forney High School Student Council) - Members of the Forney High School Student Council recently gained skills in goal setting, team building, problem solving and project planning though interactive methods at the Texas Association of Student Council (TASC) Leadership Workshop at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacognoches, Texas.
The FHS Student Council Officers, President AdriAnne Laky, Vice-President Brianna Peacock, District III Recording Secretary Makenzie Demarest, Treasurer Tyler Teer, Secretary Hailey McClung, Historian Matti Rooney and Parliamentarians Logan Heath and Michael Luecke represented Forney High School as delegates to the workshop July 11 through the July 15. During the five days of rigorous training and project based learning, the FHS Student Council officers gained the tools and knowledge necessary to improve student council effectiveness at Forney High School.
"I attended this workshop because I wanted to better my leadership skills, open mindedness and listening to everyone's ideas", said Student Council Treasurer Tyler Teer. "I am excited to bring what I have learned back to my school to better my student council and my school’s environment to make it a more spirited atmosphere."
The workshop theme of ‘The Ripple Effect’ encouraged student leaders to understand how everything they do or do not do and every decision they make has wide ranging effects. They learned that as student council members, they have the opportunity to plan and complete projects that profoundly impact the culture and climate of their school as well as individual students.
"One of the most important things I learned at the workshop is loving your community, and I will use that to spread positivity at Forney High School," said Student Council Historian and Junior Class President Matti Rooney. “I appreciate Forney High School Principal, Steve Whiffen allowing us to attend this workshop. We intend to make full use of everything we learned."
Phillip Jenkins, the Forney High School Student Council Advisor also attended the conference.
"Our student council officers thoroughly enjoyed the workshop,” Jenkins noted. “This was the first time our council has been able to attend one. They truly gained valuable leadership experience and represented Forney High School and the City of Forney extremely well as they worked with student leaders from across the State of Texas. We had several students earn officer positions in their small groups and one student was even elected president of his group. I am so proud of these officers for taking this step and wanting to make positive ripples throughout the Forney ISD community,"
During the workshop, students were given time to bond as a hometown council. The Forney High School Student Council officers chose to complete in an escape room competition at EscapeNac, an interactive and intuitive real-life room escape game. The officers completed the room with one-minute left, a feat that only two other groups had completed before. Out of nearly 50 groups to attempt to complete the 'Twisted Tales' Escape Room, the Forney High Student Council officers set a new completion record.
