FORNEY, Texas — Forney Independent School District Superintendent Suzanne McWilliams announced the 2015-16 Campus and District Teachers of the Year at the Forney Chamber of Commerce’s 29th Annual Chamber Banquet on Thursday night.

FORNEY, Texas — Forney Independent School District Superintendent Suzanne McWilliams announced the 2015-16 Campus and District Teachers of the Year at the Forney Chamber of Commerce’s 29th Annual Chamber Banquet on Thursday night.

In February, the district announced the Capus Teachers of the Year for all 14 campuses in the district, they were: Karla Maldonado from Blackburn Elementary, Becky Fischbeck from Claybon Elementary, Lisa Hampton from Criswell Elementary, Mary Jane Farrow from Crosby Elementary, Sherri Watson from Henderson Elementary, Rebecca Hensley from Johnson Elementary, Elizabeth Kneggs from Lewis Elementary, Leslie Camp from Rhea Elementary, Kiala Albright from Smith Elementary, Laura Telschow from Brown Middle School, Catherine Watkins from Warren Middle School, Kayla Childress from Forney High School, Savannah Hollis from North Forney High School, and Tamyla Hasbrouck from the Forney Academic Center.

“These teachers make a difference in the life of a child each and every day,” stated McWilliams.

Maldonado was selected as the district’s Elementary Teacher of the Year and Childress was selected as the Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Maldonado is a 5th and 6th grade dual language reading and socials studies teacher on the Spanish side, according to McWilliams.

“Karla Maldonado is dedicated to her students and their individual growth,” stated McWilliams who said Maldonado designs engaging lessons that allow her students to explore and create in Spanish and tracks each students individual growth — making home visits and tutoring when needed.

“Mrs. Maldonado doesn’t do all of these things for the title of Teacher of the Year, she truly does it for her students, our Blackburn students, our community, and their future,” stated McWilliams.

Childress, an English language arts teacher, is among the rare teachers in the liberal arts who is able to communicate a passion for the richness of literature to her students, according to McWilliams.

“She is an expert at the learning cycle, wherein she leads the effort to prepare engaging lessons, analyzes student work, and intervenes for her students and those of others on her team, as its intervention teacher,” stated McWilliams. “The results are demonstrably outstanding. Her team had state test score results that surpassed local expectations and have proven to be among the best in our area and statewide.”

“Childress is able to apply the science of teaching to the beauty of literature in the English language and lead others in that effort as well,” stated McWilliams. “On behalf of her students, the results are impressive.”
