KAUFMAN, Texas (Kaufman Independent School District) - Kaufman High School (KHS) is giving a select group of students a life-changing opportunity: Help fellow students.
Crystal Huff, KHS English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and campus coordinator, recently formed and announced the KHS ESL Ambassadors program.
ESL Ambassadors are a select group of bilingual students who have been chosen to serve as translators, tutors, and mentors to the growing population of non-English speakers at KHS. ESL Ambassadors go directly into core and elective classes to assist their peers.
The purpose of the ESL Ambassadors program is two-fold. Ambassadors will help new, struggling ELL (English Language Learner) students in their classes and see that their contribution(s) meaningfully impact society.
βIt's my hope that the implementation of ESL Ambassadors will pay dividends to both the mentor and the student receiving assistance. Our ESL Ambassadors are some of our more advanced students that have learned the English language in addition to their home language. They understand the obstacles that are associated with learning a new language in an educational setting. These are students that are excited to help and we are hopeful that peer assistance will prove to be an effective, comfortable means for students receiving the assistance,β said KHS Principal, Amy Keith.
The ESL Ambassadors for the 2016-2017 school year are as follows:
Nancy Bermudez
Michael Buu
Nayeli De Leon
Arturo Coronado
Benito Loera
Elvira Santacruz
Jesse Torres
