TEA releases new A-F school district ratings

FORNEY, Texas — With just days until local schools reconvene for another year, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has released their grades for school districts today.

FORNEY, Texas — With just days until local schools reconvene for another year, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has released their grades for school districts today.

The grades are part of the new A-F Public School Accountability System and are based largely on the results of the 2018 STAAR tests, or State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, and the End-of-Course exams.

“We do this for two main reasons. First, parents should know how well our schools are performing so they can better support their children. Second, educators benefit from having clear information about school performance, highlighting successes and challenges, to help improve support for students over time,” said Mike Morath, Texas Education Commissioner.

Many local district administrators have spoken out against the ratings prior to their release.

“While letter grades seem simple, no one can explain why a district receives an A or an F,” said Sunnyvale schools Superintendent Doug Williams in a recent statement. “Numerous pages of complicated calculations are used to reduce district performance measures — mainly standardized test scores — into a single letter grade.”

Williams is also the legislative chairman of the Texas Association of School Administrators, which opposes the new system.

School and district ratings are based on multiple measures, which include more than just test scores. The overall rating is calculated using the school’s score in three areas: Student Achievement; School Progress; and Closing the Gaps.

To help explain the system in basic terms, TXschools.org includes easy-to-read descriptions and tools describing just how the system works, according to the TEA.
