TERRELL, Texas — A 12-year-old student was arrested in connection with a bathroom fire at Furlough Middle School on Wednesday afternoon, according to the fire marshal.
Furlough Middle School was evacuated Wednesday after a fire was reported in an upstairs boys' bathroom. Terrell Fire Department Fire Marshal Tom Cooper said paper and plastic items were set on fire in the bathroom and the fire was being investigated as an arson case.
Friday afternoon, Cooper, speaking with inForney.com, said a 12-year-old student was arrested in connection with the fire. The juvenile is being held at the Hunt County Juvenile Probation and Detention Center in Greenville, Texas.
The fire was described as small but forced the evacuation of the entire campus. Fire crews remained on scene after extinguishing the fire and set fans to remove the lingering smoke from the building.
Parents began arriving at the school a short time after noon to begin picking up their students and the remaining students were bused to Bruce Wood Elementary just a short distance away.
All of the students and faculty were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Furlough Middle School will reopen tomorrow, Thursday, September 23, 2015, with students reporting to their 5th period classes at 8:25 a.m. to collect their belongings. Morning athletic practices were canceled.
Members of the Terrell Fire Department and Terrell Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire.
