KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — An 18-wheeler dumped more than 150 gallons of fuel for several miles on westbound I-20 after striking debris in the road and rupturing a fuel tank Thursday night, November 6, 2014.
The 18-wheeler, hauling cattle, likely struck the unknown debris around mile marker 509, possibly before, but was unaware of the fuel leak until he came to a stop at Farm-to-Market (FM) 429 in Kaufman County, Texas — approximately three miles. The debris ruptured a saddle tank on the tractor.
Approximately 150 to 200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the road, mostly on the FM 429 exit ramp, according to Kaufman County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie. The Elmo Volunteer Fire Department closed the exit ramp and assisted in containing the spill while a nearly 10-man HAZMAT was in route to clean the ramp.
The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Transportation also responded to the scene.
