KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — 25 animals were killed in a residential structure fire in eastern Kaufman County on Monday afternoon, according to fire officials.
At approximately noon, on Monday, firefighters from the College Mound Volunteer Fire Department and the Kaufman Fire Department responded to a structure fire on County Road (CR) 109A.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a 30x40 metal fabricated building with heavy fire and smoke showing, according to College Mound Volunteer Fire Department Chief Joshua Phillips.
The home was completely destroyed in the fire, according to Phillips, and two people who lived there were displaced. They were not home at the time of the fire.
25 animals, five dogs and 20 cats, perished in the fire, Phillips told inForney.com. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Phillips says a large amount of ammunition briefly hindered the firefighter's efforts to extinguish the blaze .
The American Red Cross of Kaufman County and the College Mound Fire Corps also assisted.
