MABANK, Texas — Family and friends attended the funeral services for a 52-year-old Mabank man who died of complications from injuries sustained in an assault last month.
52-year-old Larry Suratt of Mabank, Texas, was described by friends and family as a devoted grandfather, father, husband, and friend.
On June 29, 2015, Suratt was mowing at his mother’s home in southeastern Kaufman County, according to Bill Hartzer, a neighbor, who began a GoFundMe account for medical and funeral expenses for Suratt’s family.
Suratt, while at his mother’s property, was assaulted by a man who the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office said was also there to work on the property on County Road 4012.
The man, identified as 56-year-old Roy Dwayne Toney, allegedly ran over Suratt with his truck and trailer during a dispute. Tony’s truck and trailer became wedged in between two trees as he attempted to flee the scene and that’s when Suratt’s mother, reportedly in her 70s, shot Toney in the leg with a shotgun, Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office Captain Fred Klingelberger told inForney.com the day of the shooting.
Toney was treated for his injuries and booked into the Kaufman County Jail on a $30,000 bond for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The bond has since been raised to $100,000.
A request to determine whether or not the assault charge will be enhanced to a murder charge in the wake of Suratt’s death has not yet been returned.
Suratt, who suffered a broken nose, broken femur, broken rib, broken pelvis, and other medical issues which required several surgeries, later died on July 7, 2015, of complications related to those injuries, according to Hartzer and family members.
“He was a loving and caring man who will be missed tremendously by his family and friends,” read a portion of Suratt’s obituary.
