KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — An abandoned home on County Road (CR) 304 was destroyed in a fire Saturday afternoon, October 4, 2014.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., Kaufman County dispatchers alerted the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department about that blaze. The fire, just south of Terrell, Texas, sent a large plume of black smoke in the air which could be seen county wide.
The fire began after the property owner and a friend were shooting at targets in the building when an unknown type of explosion occurred, according to Kaufman County Fire Marshal Randy Richards. Unable to extinguish the fire, the home owner called 911 to report the explosion and fire.
Firefighters contained small grass fires around the home during the fire. The home had been abandoned and vacant for years, according to Richards. There was no insurance on the home and it was a total loss. No other property damage was reported as a result of the fire.
The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department responded to at least six other grass, brush, or burn-ban violation type fires on Saturday.
The Kaufman Volunteer Fire Department also responded for mutual aid.
