FORNEY, Texas — Westbound U.S. Highway 80 is closed after back-to-back, ice-related accidents near the Dallas-Kaufman County line Monday morning.
The first accident was reported just before 4:15 a.m. on westbound U.S. Highway 80 at the East Fork Trinity River bridge and involved a single vehicle. The car lost control and struck the bridge guardrail — blocking the right lane of traffic on the bridge.
The first accident forced the closure of westbound U.S. Highway 80 for approximately an hour before the left lane was reopened at 5:25 a.m.
Before the highway was closed, an 18-wheeler passed the first accident and veered off the right shoulder of the highway approximately 100 yards from the first accident. The 18-wheeler went partially down an embankment before jackknifing and coming to a stop. The trailer punctured the right-side fuel saddle tank which resulted in approximately 90 gallons of diesel fuel spilling.
A heavy-duty wrecker and HAZMAT crew were dispatched to this accident. The driver was uninjured.
