FORNEY, Texas — A benefit auction and dinner will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014, for a Forney man, husband, and father who is awaiting a heart transplant.
14 years ago, Luis Rodriguez was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cancer of lymph tissue, at the age of 32. Rodriguez underwent chemotherapy and radiation for a tumor in his chest and, because of the tumor’s proximity to his heart, he was unable to undergo surgery for its removal.
The tumor was now gone but the family faced overwhelming medical bills and Rodriguez’s heart was damaged in the radiation treatment. 14 years later, Rodriguez has been placed on the heart transplant list at Medical City Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Rodriguez’s wife, Leticia Rodriguez, is the campus secretary at Forney Independent School District’s Rhea Elementary School where friends and co-workers have come together to help bear the financial burden.
“We knew he had to come together to do a fundraiser for Lettie and her family,” co-worker and friend Sheri Price told inForney.com. “God has blessed it. 100 percent of the proceeds benefit [the Rodriguez family] because people and Forney businesses have donated to cover the cost of the event.”
The benefit auction will be held at the First Baptist Church of Forney on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and is $50 per plate. Limited dinner seating is available, contact Sheri Price at (214) 502-4318 to RSVP for dinner. The auction is expected to begin around 6:45 p.m.
The auction includes over $5,500 in donated items to be auctioned off, including, among other things, gift baskets, a 40-inch LED TV, a movie-themed basket, jewelry, custom antiques, several restaurant gift cards, and two hand-painted, one-of-a-kind canvases.
