MESQUITE, Texas β Several injuries were reported following a three-car rollover accident Tuesday night, July 22, 2014, on westbound I-20 near the Dallas-Kaufman County line.
According to Lt. David Gill with the Mesquite Police Department, a white Chevy pickup truck was pushing a stranded motorist, who reportedly ran out of fuel, off the highway at approximately 9:55 p.m. when it was rear-ended by a third vehicle described as a GM Sonic.
The impact sent the truck airborne before landing upside down, backwards, and on top of a guardrail. The stranded motorist's vehicle sustained major rear-end damage and the GM Sonic sustained major front-end damage.
"The accident report indicates that there was no sign of alcohol or drug use on the part of the driver that struck the truck," according to Gill.
Authorities could not confirm the total number of patients transported but did confirm every occupant of the vehicles involved in the accident were transported to area hospitals. Three patients were reportedly taken to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
A passenger in the GM Sonic sustained potentially life-threatening injuries. Authorities confirmed on Wednesday morning the passenger is expected to survive. The conditions of the other patients is unknown.
I-20 westbound was closed at Farm-to-Market (FM) 740 while police conducted an accident investigation. The accident occurred on a bridge in the East Fork Trinity River bottoms between FM 741 in Kaufman County and Lawson Road in Dallas County.
The Mesquite Police Department, Mesquite Fire Department, Forney Fire Department, Forney Police Department, Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, and East Texas Medical Center ambulances responded to the accident scene.
