KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The site for a future memorial garden at the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center was announced earlier today.

The Carl “Skip” Thomas Memorial Garden will be built at the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center — named in honor of Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Carl “Skip” Thomas who lost his battle with liver disease in 2011.

Thomas’ sister, Wendy Thomas, proposed the memorial garden to Kaufman County Sheriff David Brynes several weeks ago, according to a press release, and Byrnes later approved and selected the proposed location for memorial garden.

“It is an enduring gift for Kaufman County that extends the legacy of a gracious young man and will welcome visitors to a vibrant landscape throughout the year,” stated Wendy Thomas. “It will provide a tranquil place where everyone is welcome and the legacy of deputies will continues to grow.”

The garden, which will be open year round, will feature a cemented walkway with benches, perennial and annual plants, and engraved markers with the names of the deputies who have passed.

Wendy Thomas stated she hopes the garden will celebrate those who had a commitment of service to others through their capacity at the sheriff’s department.

Wendy Thomas, who is also the President and CEO of Thomas Protective Service, Inc., is hosting a dinner and prayer vigil for law enforcement officers and their families on October 14, 2015, at Shannon Park in Kaufman, Texas, at 5:30 p.m.

In 2012, the Carl “Skip” Thomas Memorial Fund was established to provide scholarships for Kemp and Kaufman High School graduates seeking a future in law enforcement as well as assisting Kaufman County law enforcement or fire service families in need.

Landscaping materials for the memorial garden are being provided by Murrah’s Landscaping of Kaufman, Texas.
