KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas – The Kaufman County Commissioners' Court is scheduled to discuss and possibly consider an increased county property tax rate for the 2014-15 budget on Monday morning, August 25, 2014, at 9:30 a.m.
The proposed tax rate will see a nearly two cent increase due to the voter-approved $56 million Kaufman County Transportation bond. The county sold $30 million of the bonds to begin some of the county's short-term transportation goals, according to Kaufman County Judge Bruce Wood.
“We still have $26 million to sell,” said Wood. “But it'll be another couple years before we sell any additional bonds.”
The new proposed tax rate is 57.62 cents per $100 assessed property valuation up from 55.65 cents per $100 valuation – an increase of 1.97 cents.
The proposed 2014-15 budget calls for a decrease of $357,174 in the county's $34 million general fund – the county's main operating fund. According to Wood, last year's general fund expenses were $34,421,380 and the proposed budget will operate on expenses of $34,064,206.
Each employee, employed as of April 1, 2014, is expected to receive a $1,200 raise distributed monthly compared to budget years in the past when employees received a $500 supplement check in November and the remainder of the raise was distributed monthly.
A budget hearing will be held in September at which time the commissioners will act upon adopting the final budget.
Monday mornings meeting will be held in the Kaufman County Commissioners' Court meeting room within the Kaufman County Court Annex Building located at 100 North Washington Street in Kaufman, Texas.
