CRANDALL, Texas — Two Crandall Fire Department firefighters received Life Saving Awards on Monday night, April 27, 2015.
On March 25, 2015, Crandall Fire Department Assistant Chief Grant Cousins and Captain John Taylor responded to a home in the 4300 block of Joy Lane for a man who was reportedly choking. When they arrived, they found the man “cyanotic, conscious, and actively choking,” according to Chief Allen Cousins.
“Cousins stood the patient up and began giving abdominal thrusts in an attempt to free the foreign object,” stated Chief Cousins. “While conducting abdominal thrusts the patient collapsed, went unconscious and stopped breathing.”
“While on the floor, Taylor was able to place the patient in a position to continue giving abdominal thrusts while waiting for CareFlite EMS to arrive. After several abdominal thrusts, the foreign object was dislodged from the patients’ airway where he was able to breathe on his own and regain consciousness,” said Chief Cousins.
The man was then transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
“Due to the quick actions, knowledge, and training, both Cousins and Taylor were able to successfully administer lifesaving skills that saved the life of a veteran citizen of our community. It is with great honor that I recognize them both for their heroic efforts,” Chief stated.
The award was presented to Cousins and Taylor by Chief Cousins and Emergency Services District #7 President David Kirk.

Most of the time our good deeds go unnoticed by the public, but its instances like this where they need to be recognized. I’m very proud of them both as well as all of our firefighters who gracefully give up time with their families to help those in need,” Chief Cousins told inForney.com
