FORNEY, Texas — Eastbound U.S. Highway 80 has reopened in between Forney and Terrell following a wreck which resulted in an overhead highway sign collapsing on the highway.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department, Forney Fire Department, Forney Police Department, Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Terrell Fire Department responded to the wreck. An SUV traveling westbound struck a support beam for an overhead highway sign and caused the sign to collapse across the eastbound lanes — forcing the closure of the highway.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 23-year-old Mario Watkins, will be charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to identify, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Kyle Bradford told inForney.com. A female passenger in the SUV was transported to an area hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

Eastbound traffic was being diverted onto the service road at the Windmill Farms Boulevard exit. A dense fog caused low visibility.
