Tonight, the freezing rain and sleet is expected to stay west of Kaufman County. However, rain is expected in our area. “Some light icing will be possible as far east as a Bonham to Rockwall to Waco to Temple line,” stated a Hazardous Weather Outlook released by the NWS Wednesday morning.
Widespread rain, including freezing rain and some sleet, will continue Thursday morning through midday for northern portions of Kaufman County. These conditions are also possible in the remaining areas of the county.
Rain and possibly a thunderstorm will continue Friday and into early Saturday, according to the NWS.
If freezing rain and sleet should accumulate, drivers should use caution on the roads including on bridges and overpasses where ice is most likely to accumulate.
On this day in 1978, North Texas experienced one of the worst ice storms in 30 years which caused over $14 million in damage, the death of a young boy in Dallas County, at least five indirect deaths due to ice-related vehicle accidents, and approximately 2,000 injuries from frost bites, accidents, and falls. Power outages were also reported for more than 300,000 people.
