FORNEY, Texas — A five-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital on Saturday night following an accidental shooting.
The Forney Fire Department, Forney Police Department, and Kaufman County Sheriff's Office responded to the call at approximately 6:45 p.m. at a trailer home at The Official Paintball Games of Texas in the 17000 block of Adams Trail in far northwestern Kaufman County.
A six-year-old and the five-year-old boy were watching TV in the trailer, according to Kaufman County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Captain Fred Klingelberger said.
The boy found the gun and showed the 6-year-old, Klingelberger said. The six-year-old told the boy to put the gun down and turned back to watch the TV.
Klingelberger said the 6-year-old heard a gunshot and turned around to find the boy on the ground. The six-year-old ran and notified parents in a neighboring building.
The five-year-old boy, who was shot in the head with a 9mm Glock, was alert and conscious upon being airlifted by CareFlite medical helicopter to Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, according to Klingelberger. On Monday, Klingelberger said the child remained in critical condition with a positive prognosis after undergoing his second surgery.
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the shooting.
Its unknown who the gun belonged to and whether charges would be filed.
This is a developing story.
