FORNEY, Texas — A man was able to escape any injuries after the truck he was driving caught on fire Monday afternoon.

Police say the driver was traveling north on Farm-to-Market (FM) 740 just before 4:30 p.m. when he saw smoke coming from under the dash of his 2016 Toyota Tundra — in the area of Mesquite city limits between Seagoville and Forney. The driver attempted to snuff out the smoke with a shirt when the shirt caught on fire.

The driver was able to pull off the road just south of Interstate 20 and exit the truck before it was fully engulfed in flames.

Several rounds of ammunition also discharged in the fire. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters with the Forney Fire Department and Mesquite Fire Department responded to the fire along with the Mesquite Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety.

Police say several aftermarket modifications were made to the vehicle and may be the cause of the fire. The Mesquite Fire Department’s fire marshal is investigating.
